About us.
Z-COON is a small family Maine Coon cattery in the Quebec countryside. We've been breeding since 2016, registered with TICA and ACFA (two independent cat registries), and every breeding cat goes on a DNA health panel for HCM, PKD and SMA.
Ten years in, a handful of cats, a quiet stretch of land, and every kitten still feels like our first.
We started Z-COON in 2016 with one queen and a simple idea: that breeding could feel like raising a family. That hasn't changed since.
Lana
My name is Svetlana, but everyone here calls me Lana. Our first Maine Coon joined us as a family pet. Living with a cat that big and that gentle made the decision for me: I wanted to raise them, and I wanted other families to be able to live with one too. I don't do things halfway, so I went back to school for the cats, twice. In 2017 I qualified as a felinologist (the formal study of cats: genetics, breeding, show rules, veterinary science) with the International Felinological Association FARUS, passing with the grade "Excellent". In 2022, here in Quebec, I completed an Attestation d'études professionnelles (AEP) in animal care at Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
The cats live with us.
There's no cattery building here, no separate room with a closed door. The cats are on the sofa, on the bed, and on the kitchen counter when we aren't looking.
Kittens are part of the family from day one, handled every day. They grow up in the noise of a real house: the vacuum, the dishwasher, kids visiting on weekends, the neighbour’s dog. By the time they leave, not much surprises them.
Health comes first.
We put every breeding cat on the DNA panel for the diseases that follow Maine Coons: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), polycystic kidney disease (PKD), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK-Def). Results go up on the site as they come back from the lab, and echocardiogram reports are available on request.
Every kitten goes home vaccinated, dewormed, sterilized, microchipped, and with a written health guarantee.
Where they go matters.
We'll ask you questions about your home, your other animals, your hours and how much you travel. It isn't to judge you. We want the kitten you're falling for to fit the life you actually have.
If life changes, the kitten you took home is always welcome back. We’ve taken Z-COON cats back at six months old and at nine years old, and we always will.
